With the support of the Ministry of Development under History and Cultural Heritage research projects, the Halet Çambel Mansion, also known as the historical “Red Mansion” in Arnavutköy, has been restored and is scheduled to be the location of the center. Prof. Halet Çambel, an eminent name in the field of archaeology, and her Ağahan Architecture Award-winning husband, Nail Çakırhan, lived more than a half century in “the Red Mansion.” In contrast to western architectural features, this building has a unique Late-Ottoman residential layout, integrating an architectural culture and landscape/garden organization which appeared in the 20th century. The center will house Halet Çambel and Nail Çakırhan’s personal archives and documents, and also their archaeological archives; materials, plans, drawings, and photographs from their Karatepe excavations, and the collection of Halet Çambel’s elder sister, Leyla Hanım. Classification, cataloguing and digitization efforts of this archive are currently underway.
