Kandilli Campus essentially houses the traditional functions of the Kandilli Observatory, which was founded in 1868 and then annexed to Bogazici University in 1982, and the functions of the new institute of earthquake research were created after this annexation. The proper name of the academic body that encompasses both functions is Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute.
