A warm welcome to incoming students from Boğaziçi University – a university that embraces integrity, open-mindedness, multidimensionality, inventiveness, and entrepreneurialism; and offers a unique life experience with the values it represents…
“We offer the world’s best academic program”
The 2016-2017 academic year started with the Orientation Program held at the university’s newest and youngest campus at Kilyos Sarıtepe.
In her first speech of the 2016-2017 academic year, President Gülay Barbarosoğlu addressed incoming students at the Kilyos Sarıtepe Campus on September 20.
“When I first came to this university in 1974, I was as excited as you are this morning. As the most outstanding young people of Turkey, you have earned the right to be students of one of the best universities in the country; I extend my sincere congratulations to you and your families. We are ready to offer you the best academic program in the world. You have achieved a major success, and now the responsibility is ours. Our highly qualified teaching staff will do their utmost to guide you to become successful persons. Our educational programs are geared to teach you to be innovative, enterprising individuals.”
Emphasizing Boğaziçi University’s values and culture of democracy, Barbarosoğlu continued: “In this school we will live together in an environment rich in diversity, talking and communicating with each other. The concepts of democracy and freedom cannot be conceived as independent from each other. Without freedom, there can be no democracy, and democracy cannot exist where there is no freedom. You will experience this free environment in every platform in this university.”
Stating that as a state university, Boğaziçi University considers the public and societal benefit of every study and activity conducted, Barbarosoğlu explained that at BU, cultural and artistic activities are believed to be the most important components of education. She invited incoming students to participate in campus events for their intellectual development, and to participate in the Council of Student Representatives (ÖTK) to have a voice in university governance.
The President’s speech was followed by the welcome speech of Prof. Zeynep Atay, Vice President responsible for student affairs and Director of the School of Foreign Languages. Another speaker to address the students was Associate Prof. Zeynep Uysal, Dean of Students, who emphasized that the intellectual and cultural capital the students would acquire at BU was as equally important as academic knowledge.
Also on the first day of the Orientation Program, Associate Prof. Emre Otay, Coordinator of the Kilyos Sarıtepe Campus, met with the students at the Necmi Tanyolaç Sports Hall. Otay told the students, “You will spend four very valuable years at Boğaziçi University’s youngest campus. As a campus established by modern Turkey, by our generation, Sarıtepe is an environment-friendly, sustainable, self-sufficient campus that produces the energy it uses, and as such it is probably the only campus with these characteristics.”
The five fundamental values students gain at Boğaziçi
The next speaker was the head of the Council of Student Representatives, Mert Nacakgediği, who announced to the students that he had some good news for them: “You distinguished students have made the best decision in your lives by selecting Boğaziçi University. Boğaziçi University will not only give you a diploma; it will provide you with the chance to acquire a new philosophy of life and to discover yourself. This university will not be content with only giving you a very high quality undergraduate education; it will show you the significance of experiencing and nurturing many human values.”
A student-centered university
Referring to the five fundamental values students gain at BU, Mert Nacakgediği said, “At this university you will learn the value of integrity. You will be open to different ideas. You will become multidimensional persons. You will become active individuals who have leadership qualities, not passive persons. And most importantly, you will gain self-confidence. I hope that these values will be your heritage.”
“Now, if you ask me how Boğaziçi University provides us with these fundamental values, I would say by being aware of each student’s potential. From our President who proudly represents our university to the security personnel guarding the gates of the university, from the dining hall staff who serve us three meals a day to our academicians, you will see that at this university the student is at the center of everyone’s agenda. But there is one council where you have a special place. It is not student centered, it is itself composed of students. That is the Council of Student Representatives. That council is your voice on campus; it gives you the chance to have a say in university governance, and finds quick solutions to your problems. That Council, ÖTK, will be with you throughout the years you spend at BU.”
The first day of the Orientation program continued with the performances of the jazz choir of the BU Music Club (BUMK), BU Dance Club (BUDans) and BU Film Club (BUFK).

I came to this school for my personal development and for the development of people around me. My father is an academician, and I want to follow in his footsteps. Everyone here is very friendly. I enjoyed the orientation program a lot; I even enjoyed the information about the engineering departments even though I will not attend any of those departments. We received information from the Scholarship Office. I am interested in photography, so the first thing I did was to go and join the Photography Club. The Islamic Research Club also sounded interesting.

Boğaziçi University made us feel valuable from the moment we came here. They promised to teach us many things. That is very good. I am happy to be in a school where different people can live together, where everyone respects the freedoms of others, and no one judges people for their opinions.

I liked the Kilyos Campus. Students living in the dorms here are very lucky. We received a very warm welcome today. I am happy to be admitted to BU. I think I have made the right choice; I knew it the moment I came here.
Yasin YOKUŞ /Civil Engineering
When I marked Boğaziçi University as my first choice, I was only thinking about the Civil Engineering Department. I had become familiar with BU during the Spring Fest. At the Spring Fest I learned a lot about the university. I already knew that they provided an excellent education; I had also talked with several men and women studying at BU. Today everyone was interested in us. Actually, some students personally came and registered us as members of the Management and Economics Club.
