MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAM
The M.S. Program in Chemistry is comprised of 8 courses (minimum of 24
credits), a Master thesis, two seminars and a graduate seminar (CHEM 579).
Advanced Organic Chemistry and Advanced Physical Chemistry are the two
required courses for this program. Two of the remaining six courses can
be taken from graduate courses offered by other departments with the permission
of the student's advisor.
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM
The Ph.D. Program in Chemistry consists of seven graduate courses (minimum
21 credits), two seminars, a qualifying examination, a thesis proposal,
and a thesis to be completed in accordance with the regulations of the
Institute. A maximum of two courses can be taken from the graduate courses
offered by other departments with the permission of the student's advisor.

An intensive study of selected advanced topics related to current research
in organic chemistry.

CHEM 512 Advanced Physical Chemistry (Ileri Fiziksel
Kimya) (3+0+0) 3
An intensive study of selected advanced topics related to current research
in physical chemistry such as thermodynamics, kinetics, spectroscopy,
bulk electric and magnetic properties, macromolecular physical chemistry,
molecular structure and applied numerical methods.

An intensive survey of selected advanced topics related to current research
in analytical chemistry.

A survey of the recent advances in biochemistry and/or study of the more
specialized areas in biochemistry which are not included in the earlier
biochemistry courses, such as plant biochemistry, biological membranes,
biochemistry of the nervous system, biochemistry of human disorders, biochemical
toxicology, etc.

Potential energy surfaces and geometry optimizations, frequency calculations,
effect of basis sets, chemical reactions and reactivity calculations,
modeling systems in solutions.
CHEM 531 Mechanical Properties of Polymers (3+0+0)

(Polimerlerin Mekanik Ozellikleri)
Mechanical properties of polymers and typical polymer transitions. Deformation
mechanisms; viscous flow, elasticity, rubberlike elasticity and viscoelasticity.
Effect of molecular structure and environment on mechanical properties
of polymers. Experimental methods used in determination of mechanical
properties of polymers including melt flow index, tensile, tear, stress
relaxation, creep, impact, fatigue, abrasion, hardness and dynamic mechanical
tests together with their ASTM references.

Synthesis of organic compounds, modern laboratory techniques, oxidation,
reduction, condensation, alkylation reactions, separation and purification
methods. Six hours of laboratory per week.

Physical properties of polymer: phase transitions, solubility, crystallization
and crystal structures, viscoelastic behavior; property-structure relationships.
Examination of industrial operations such as molding, extrusion, drawing,
etc.

CHEM 537 Polymer Characterization (Polimer Karakterizasyonu)

Fundamental concepts in polymer analysis and characterization. Sampling
and sample preparation. Extraction and analysis of extracts; UV, VIS,
IR, NMR and MS. Determination of molecular weights of polmers by functional
group analysis, measurements of colligate properties, light scattering,
ultracentrifugation and dilute solution viscocity. Fraction of polymers
by solubility and size exclusion chromatography (SEC).
CHEM 538 Polymer Applications (Polimer Uygulamalari)

Synthesis and important applications of polymers such as liquid crystalline
polymers for optical information storage, water soluble polymers as drug
carriers and their oil recovery properties, biodegradable polymer systems
for biomedical and biotechnological applications, conducting polymers,
photopolymers for coating applications, polymeric catalysts and adhesives.

Synthesis and manufacture of fiber reinforced polymers. Synhtesis of modern
engineering thermoplastics and liquid molding resins and fibers and fillers
such as glass fiber, carbon fiber and particulate fillers. The chemistry
of silane and titane coupling agents and measurement of fiber-matrix adhesion.
Resin transfer molding, sheet and bulk molding compounds, open mold and
spray-up techniques and filament winding operations. Industrial use of
polymer composites in infrastructure, building, automotive, aircraft,
sports and defense industries.

Methods of isolation, chemical and spectral structure determinations,
synthesis and biosynthetic origins of natural products are discussed.
Medicinal applications of naturally occurring alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids
and flavonoids are covered.

Basic NMR theory and instrumentation, NMR parameters, chemical shift,
spin-spin coupling, analysis of complex spin systems, nuclear overhouser
effect, principles of pulse NMR and application on proton and insensitive
nuclei such as 13C, 15N, 17O, complex pulse sequences, two dimensional
NMR (COSY, HETCOR, INADEQUATE, NOESY), dynamic NMR.

Light, waves, atoms and molecules. Electromagnetic radiation, energy levels
in atoms, molecular orbitals and electronic states vibrational and rotational
energies, potential energy functions, electronic transitions, selection
rules, the Frank-Condon principle, light absorption and its physical consequences,
characteristics of photochemical reactions, decay and deactivation of
excited atoms, diatomic molecules and polyatomic molecules. Light absorption
by atoms, primary products case studies, experimental and theoretical
selected research topics.
