COURSE DESCRIPTIONS


AE 111 Advanced English I (Ileri Duzeyde Ingilizce I) (3+0+0) 3
The purpose of this course is to enhance the spoken/written performance of the non-native student by emphasizing extensive discussion and essay production. An average of six to ten relevant articles are studied in depth during this semester, their subjects encompassing the fields of psychology, education, history and culture. Having read the passage at home, the students come to class prepared to defend or argue the writer's views and put forward views of their own. Written material is compared to personal case-studies and each student reaches an individual synthesis as far as the topic is concerned.

AE 112 Advanced English II (Ileri Duzeyde Ingilizce II) (3+0+0) 3
The purpose of this course is to further develop the reading comprehension and writing skills of students who have reached a certain level in English. The high-level material consists of essays from the social sciences, and the lesson itself is based on in-depth discussion.

AE 201 Report Writing I (Arastirma Teknikleri I) (3+0+0) 3
Teaching and application of basic methods of term-paper writing; library and Internet research. Documentation rules; emphasis on the concept of “plagiarism” as academic theft. Writing a term-paper with a clear thesis or question with the approvel of the instructor. Oral presentations.

AE 202 Report Writing II (Arastirma Teknikleri II) (3+0+0) 3
Advanced field research; an interactive ‘workshop’. Sampling, giving questionnaires and conducting interviews. Analysis of survey results. Progress evaluation through portfolios.
Prerequisite: AE 201 or consent of instructor.

AE 204 English through Public Speaking and Drama I (3+0+0) 3
(Tiyatro ile Ingilizce I)
Teaching the attributes of public speaking, familiarizing the concepts of voice production and breathing techniques, intonation, emphasis, and articulation in presenting the text of a speech, excersices in public speaking, providing appreciation of plays read through class discussion, analysis of various articles to ensure a grasp of the culture of drama, and to enable question on the set text to be answered, helping to raise the level of English, and to increase mastery of language.

AE 205 English through Public Speaking and Drama II (3+0+0) 3
(Tiyatro ile Ingilizce II)
Preparation of a text to be presented in public speaking, developing further skills in voice production and breathing techniques, intonation, emphasis, and articulation required in public speaking, exercises in public speaking, trials in writing short sketches, appreciation of the plays read through class discussion, reading and discussion of articles to develop the culture of drama, helping to raise the level of English and to increase mastery of language.

AE 221 Critical Reading (Elestirel Okuma) (3+0+0) 3
Developing the skills necessary for a critical approach to texts in English, comprenehding the ideas and values stated or implied, comparing the writers' ideas with one's own. Underlying concepts and principles of critical language awareness theory. Individual or group analyses of texts.

AE 222 - Critical Reading II (Elestirel Okuma II) (3+0+0) 3
Development of reading and interpretive skills. Methods of discourse analysis. Narrative structures and mediation, social context, and privileged positions.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

AE 231 English for International Relations (3+0+0) 3
(Uluslararasi Iliskiler Ingilizcesi)
Study of English Language texts involving international relations. Use of texts on the European integration, security within the scope of NATO, the geopolitical situation of Turkey in the post-Cold War era.

AE 232 English for European Political Integration (3+0+0) 3
(Avrupa’nin Siyasi Butunlesmesi icin Ingilizce)
Use of English terminology related to concepts and policies of European political integration. Texts covering the last five decades, leading to the present creation of a European Constitution. Acquisition of consciousness of “Europeanness”. Enhancement of Turkey’s efforts in the process of negotiations towards membership in the EU.

AE 241 English for Self-Expression I (3+0+0) 3
(Ingilizce Ifadeyi Gelistirme I)

Enhancement of self-expression in writing and speaking. Intensive reading of authentic texts in ethics, philosophy, law and business. Emphasis on language skills, mainly reading and speaking for effective self-expression. Gaining insight into knowing and managing one’s own emotions for effective use of English in interpersonal communication.

AE 242 English for Self-Expression II (3+0+0) 3
(Ingilizce Ifadeyi Gelistirme II)
Taking sides and expressing opinions in large-scale classroom discussions on cases/ situations in areas of ethics, psychology, philosophy, law, linguistics and business. Enchancing acquired effective expression skills in English through reading, thinking and taking sides on a variety of issues. Emphasis on language skills, mainly reading and speaking, for effective self-expression.
Prerequisite: AE 241 or consent of instructor.

AE 261 English for Philosophy I (3+0+0) 3
(Felsefe icin Ingilizce I)
Understanding of English through works of philosophy and literature. Improving reading, comprehension and writing skills.

AE 262 English for Philosophy II (3+0+0) 3
(Felsefe icin Ingilizce II)
Enhancing spoken and written performance through classroom discussions and reaction papers concerning literary works on the background of philosophy.

AE 271- Language of Social Thought (Sosyal Dusuncenin Dili ) (3+0+0) 3
Thematically related readings from 'fundamental' texts in social and economic thought. Examination of formal aspects of presentation and argumentation. Emphasis on the framing of social thought; similarities and dissimilarities of intent and content; intertextuality and historical change.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

AE 300 English Through Dramatic Text 1 (3+0+0) 3
(Tiyatro Metinleriyle Ingilizce 1)
Proficiency in English reading comprehension through examples from the theater and instructive texts. Deeper awareness of language usage through emphasis on the shared components in the readings. Fluency in spoken language,critical thinking,and general culture through class discussions of plays.
